Appearance on Mnet’s Produce 101
In January 2016, Kang Mina and fellow trainees Kim Na-young and Kim Se-jeong, represented Jellyfish Entertainment on the reality survival show Produce 101 for the chance to debut in a new Mnet girl-group. The program came to an end on April 1, 2016, and the final line-up for the gir- group I.O.I was announced. It was made up of the top 11 poll-winners from the show. Kang Mina finished ninth overall, with 173,762 votes, becoming an official member of the girl-group.
Debut in IOI
Mina made her debut as one of the members of IOI. The group was initially composed of eleven members chosen from the pool of 101 trainees from various entertainment companies: Lim Na-young, Kim Chung-ha, Kim Se-jeong, Jung Chae-yeon, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Yoo Yeon-jung, Choi Yoo-jung, Kang Mi-na, Kim Do-yeon and Jeon So-mi. IOI was officially debuted on May 4, 2016, with the release of their first album, Chrysalis, accompanied with a music video for the title track “Dream Girls”. The song was a trap pop dance track co-written by Eru and Paul with rap lyrics written by members Lim Na-young and Choi Yoo-jung. On May 5, the group held their debut stage on Mnet’s M Countdown, performing the title track and “Knock Knock Knock”. On the same day, the group held their debut showcase and fan meeting at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul.
Debut in GUGUDAN
On June 10, 2016, YMC Entertainment revealed that Kang would not be taking part in I.O.I’s unit promotions, but would instead return to her agency to debut and promote with the upcoming girl-group, Gugudan. In July, 2017, a Gugudan sub-group called Gugudan 5959 was formed, with Mina and fellow member Hye-yeon. They debuted with the single “Ice Chu” on August 10, 2017. In June, 2018, a Gugudan sub-group called Gugudan Semina was formed with Mina, Sejeong, and Nayoung. They debuted with the release of their self-titled single album on July 10, 2018.
Becoming an Actress
Mina made her acting debut in the MBC romantic comedy series Children of the 20th Century in 2017, acting as the younger counterpart of Han Ye-seul (Sa Jin-jin), an idol turned actress who was adored by many. Despite her good looks and fame, she had never dated before. That same year, she played her first lead role in the 2-episode tvN drama History of Walking Upright.

Mina was confirmed to be joining IU and Yeo Jin Goo in new drama “Hotel del Luna”. This drama is about an elite hotelier, Goo Chan Sung (played by Yeo Jin Goo), who ends up as Hotel del Luna’s manager after a fateful incident, and the hotel’s beautiful, yet aloof and bad-tempered, CEO Jang Man Wol (played by IU). It is written by the Hong sisters, the writers behind hits including “Master’s Sun.” It is directed by Oh Choong Hwan, who previously directed “Doctors” and “While You Were Sleeping.” The production staff stated, “Along with IU and Yeo Jin Goo, the cast of talented actors that will make the story of del Luna is complete. Please look forward to the never-before-seen fun personalities and charms of the characters with stellar acting.” Gugudan’s Mina plays Yoo Na, a smart and energetic girl who comes to the hotel with a special background. Mina went on a diet for this drama, saying, “Recently, I ate a lot while I was resting, and I’ve started a diet once again. I exercised seriously for the first time in my life recently, and I feel like it’s healing to take a cold shower afterward. For the first time, I’ve gotten a taste for exercise.” IU added, “Mina has lost a lot of weight since the beginning of filming, and she looks a lot more fitting for her role.
